Tiago Grosso é um verdadeiro artista contemporâneo, que vive e trabalha hoje, consciente dos percursos da História da Arte e também da vida, em geral.

Tiago Grosso is a truly contemporary artist, living and working today and aware of the history of art and life in general.

A fotografia "Um dia na Ribeira" lembra-me a obra "Le Petit Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe", de Edouard Manet. Perece-se com um instantâneo, ninguém está realmente a posar para a foto, mas o resultado é um retrato preciso de uma reunião de amigos deste século.

The photo “Um dia na Ribeira” remind me of “Le Petit Dejeuner Sur L’Herbe” from Édouard Manet. It looks like a snapshot, no one is really posing for the photo but the result is a precise portrait of friends of this century.

Tiago Grosso é um artista que sabe o que quer. Pode esperar um dia inteiro ou até uma noite pela luz certa para a sua fotografia. Trabalha ainda com uma máquina analógica para poder ter mais e melhor controle sobre o que faz: não há que ter pressa, quando se sabe onde se vai.
E ele está aí.

Tiago Grosso is an artist who knows what he wants, he can wait a whole day or even night waiting for the right light for his picture. He is working with a film camera and never uses flashlight, to have more control of what he is doing. There is no need to rush when you know where you are going.
He is on the road.

"George Tabliashvili Pinturas"

George Tabliashvili, artista da Géorgia em residência na Casa 5, nasceu a 23 de Outubro de 1978, em Tbilisi, Géorgia

Graduou-se em 2002, na “Tbilisi State Academy of Arts”, na faculdade de Artes decorativas Aplicadas, com a especialidade de Cerâmica Designer.

Coopera desde 2002, como designer, em várias editoras da Georgia e da Turquia e ainda para o National Centre of Manuscripts, o British Council e para várias agências de publicidade.

Foi o vencedor do primeiro concurso internacinal de Pintura em Computador, organizado pelo Seattle Institute of Digital Arts.

Participou em diversas exposições individuais e colectivas na Georgia e no estrageiro, entre as quais:

George Tabliashvili, artist in residence from Georgia in Casa 5, was born in Tbilisi, Georgia in 1978.

In 2002 graduated from Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, the faculty of Decorative-Applied Arts, with the specialty in ceramics design.

Since 2002 has been cooperating as an artist-designer for several Georgian and Turkish publishing houses, also for the National Centre of Manuscripts, the British Council, and with various advertisement agencies.

Winner of the first international competition in Computer Paintings held by the Seattle Institute of Digital Arts.

Took part in several personal and group exhibitions in Georgia and abroad. From which most important are:

Edwin Hagendoorn (vive e trabalha em Olhão), é um verdadeiro pintor na tradição holandesa.

Reconhece-se nele a influência de Rembrandt, e Frans Hals, mas também de Manet, Bonnard e Freud. A arte como foi ensinada durante séculos.

Não mais a arte abstracta e minimalista, mas “o depois da natureza”. No vocabulário da arte actual, a “Nova escola de Leipzig”.

Os seus temas favoritos são encontrados na vida diária, como o seu estúdio, quarto, cozinha, ou no desenho da vida: retratos e nus. O seu estilo é solto e directo; ele toca a luz.Além da pintura, Edwin faz colagens num estilo surrealista e com um pensamento: não levar tudo a sério.

Existe alguma coisa para entender, ou devemos apenas viver as nossas vidas? Respirar, comer, dormir, pintar; de uma coisa vem outra e assim por diante.

Na Casa 5 vamos mostrar as suas colagens. Elas vão fazê-lo sorrir.

Edwin Hagendoorn (living and working in Olhao), a true painter in the Dutch tradition. You recognise the influence of Rembrandt and Frans Hals, but also of Manet, Bonnard and Freud.

Art as it was taught for centuries. No more abstract and minimal art but ‘after nature’.

In todays art vocabulary: 'The New Leipzig School'.

His favorite subjects are found in daily life, like his atelier, bedroom, kitchen and in life drawing: portraits and nudes. The style is loose and direct. He touches the light.

Besides painting Edwin makes collages, in a surrealist style and with a thought of 'Don't take it all to serious'.

Is there anything to understand, or shall we just live our lives? Breath, eat, sleep, paint. From one thing comes the other and so on.

In Casa 5 we will show his collages. They make you smile.

Conheci o Paulo Serra há uns anos atrás, quando este expôs no Palácio da Galeria, em Tavira.
Desenhos de grande formato, fáceis de entender visto que este mostra, através do seu trabalho uma grande abertura, indo directamente ao encontro do espectador, parecendo proclamar que nada há a esconder. De um modo ingénuo, tal como nos trabalhos do movimento “Art Brut”, do século XX, mas sem dúvida contemporâneo, com uma linguagem bem actual, sem vergonha, sem mensagens moralistas, ele fala-nos de coisas que normalmente guardamos para nós próprios.

I met Paulo Serra for the first time a couple of years ago, when he held an exhibition in the Palacio in Tavira. Large drawings, easy to understand works because he shows openess and directness; it seems he want to say that there is nothing to hide. In a way naive, like the work of the "Art Brut" movement from the 20th centrury, but definitely in a contemporary way, in today's language, without shame, without a moralistic message. He speaks about things you normally keep for yourself.

O problema instala-se assim que o olhar encontra o quadro. não que o problema começe com esse primeiro olhar, apenas parece residir aí. um problema sem começo e, portanto, sem fim, não chega a ser um verdadeiro problema mas incomoda. incomoda o intelecto que, entretanto, já marcou desemfreadamente uma rede de pontos de reconhecimento, mapa de território familiar. em vão! esses pontos estão lá, que digo, regiões inteiras oferecem-se à nossa razão, sem pudor nem vergonha, numa orgia semiótica, mas o problema persiste. pior, agrava-se à medida que o quadro procura o nosso olhar, desnudando-se ,criando autênticas zonas erógenas, de combate, onde a palavra se cala, ignorante, quase humilhada, mas estranhamente agradecida. desesperada a razão encontra a técnica. claro, a técnica! reparem como esta sobreposição de conceitos pictóricos se escapa obstinadamente a um último olhar.como o uso de múltiplas perspectivas gera um espaço dinãmico que penetra o espaço circundante , o nosso espaço. como este corpo no seu movimento, revela a anatomia que é também a do meu corpo. e como esta mancha de tinta, esta cor em contraste com este traço fino e vivo me transtorna e emociona! ... não! não é a técnica, não é a razão, não é a emoção. é a vida! este quadro sou eu que estou vivo a olhar um quadro que me emociona porque é vida. paulo serra, criador de espelhos de alma própria, pinta a sua vida!

Last day here in Casa 5; I've to pack my things and get ready for the trip back. Tree days driving through Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium and Holland.
It was a very nice time here, made some new progress in thinking with results of new work. I hope this energy will last and give me some more profit.
Thanks to Casa 5, Bli and Matthijs and hope to come back one time. Ciao.

Different eyes

The exhibition is there, so I have time to look around with different eyes.

This morning I got up at 5.30 o'clock to see the sunrise just before it comes above the horizon and reflecting in the saltpanns.

It's always a magic moment although it's always a little bit 'kitsch' on a photo. But that is allowed if you're an tourist and not a artist in residence anymore ;)

Sky kisses earth.
As long as I remember I wanted to travel. Go away, seeing new surroundings, cultures and people, but also coming home afterwards.
It was a way of moving in which I feld very alive.
Especially far trips to unknown areas, were the most appealing and I connected them to projects in my work, so to have a legitimate reason to go.

My first big project and trip was to the Polar circle in Norway where I wanted to film and make photos of Aurorae Borealis.
This immense nature phenomenon was so impressive that since then I’am looking for landscapes with this wide horizon, desolate atmosphere and high skies.

I call these landscapes ‘Empty places’, which they are not, but in the bigger view details are not so present. These landscapes influences my own mind, which mostly is full of thoughts. The longer I stay in these landscapes, my mind is getting more empty and connected to the world around.
Daily worries are disappearing and I manage better to look beyond and see relativity AND essence. It’s more possible to live in the moment.

It also has to do with being in a other surrounding, where you have to let go your own centre. Staying in an artists in recidence project like here in Casa 5; it works the same. You have to look with different eyes to your surrounding and your role in this. Making art is a part of it, because it my way of reflecting.

I was in Tavira before so I knew the saltlakes and the sea is very close to the city. This fluent transition from land to the city gives fascinating ‘ravelborders’; it gives the city a natural place in the landscape.
These ravelborders, the non-spaces, the space between, fascinates me already since I work more with art in public space.

In Tavira my fascination with desolate landscapes and the ravelborders come together because the landscape is big enough to let it fall together in the total of a wide horizon. My research here was to find out how much space a view needs to become a landscape. And how far can a wide view be, to stay comfortable.
By making different formats of panoramas, I tryed to find out how far I could go. The results can be seen in this exhibition; in the photos and in the video.
The photos shows the research to the wide view; how far can it go, how much can we ‘have’, it’s triggers the looking.

Video gives the possibility to look around in 360 degrees, like a body/head/eye can do as we turn around our axes. But by passing time it gives an abundance, and there will be a saturation point. In between, the moments of rest, I used flying birds, which have another perspective and don’t worry about horizon or view; no fear of flying.
The haiku’s express a more sharp and concentrated feeling of astonishment, melancholy or joy.

It’s important not to go away to far from the city to feel the connection. Therefore I’am looking for images who makes this visible, sometimes more far, sometimes more close; sensing identity.

In a working period, like I had here, you get within a short time intensification which is only possible if you are not in your own surrounding. Not living by an agenda, focussing only on what you (still) don’t know, new inspiration and ideas are coming up. Of course there is always a connection to thoughts of works you made before, but they get new layers and it nourishes a continues proces.

The older photos from Spitsbergen which are in this exhibition, were the starting point for this research. Finally I also come back by this photos if we talk about format, but also about the level of ‘emptyness’.
The medium photography (although I don’t call myself photographer, but visual artist) and video is an important part of my work.

Within the videoinstallation “Empty places – full mind” these landscapes are present, but also skies with passing clouds, flying birds and dreams, which are metaphors for space, longing, freedom.

But a wide view is also connected with fear and this variation of euphoria and fear is part of doing new things, take unknown roads, working abroad in an other culture etc. For me it’s necessary to develop myself, as a human and as an artist.

I make videoinstallations, photoworks, but also big sculptures in public space.
Mostly I work from a location or an event which gives me inspiration; I focus on the outside world and connect it to my inner experience. From there inevitable images come into existance.

I try to keep my autonome and commision work close to each other; sometimes a commission is an inspiration for a more free approach for example a not realised design I use later in a site-specific installation within this exhibition in Germany, because the theme is fascinating.

The other way round, I look with my own frame of reference to my surrounding and this gives again inspiration for commissions.

A few of the works I showed you now, have to do with what is shown in this exhibition or are connected to my way of thinking. There are also a few books with documentation here and of course it’s possible on my website www.loes-heebink.nl to see more of my works.

This working period was very valiable for me; my soul was getting some rest and I discovered new directions and got a lot of inspiration.
I’am very gratefull that Bli and Matthijs gave me the opportunity to work here for a month and I know for sure that this energy will last longer and I can look back on a very pleasant period.

I wish Casa 5 a good future, because it’s very important that there will be places for research where one can discover new roads; Casa 5 gives this opportunities to artists, but also the audience gets profit of new imaginations which hopefully gives them also inspiration.

The calm before the opening

The opening is coming closer; friday we brought the panorama-data to the printshop. On monday the conclusion was that the testprint didn't came out good. I didn't have a tool on my old version of Photoshop to photomerge, so I had to work on the computer of Matthijs. I started yesterday evening, worked till 3.00 hour and continued this moning. Brought them again to the printshop for a test. Hopefully it will come out good now!!!
This weekend I made the videomontage and I am very happy with it. Even the sound fits wonderfull with the admosphere and the editing points. Only now it has to play with a loop in a DVD player, so this will be the job for the nexts days + make the exhibition + an introduction. So a lot of work to do and a feeling of having not enough time, instead of the timeless feeling of the last two weeks. It is always strange to be aware of the different timeframes we're living in.

Rain

Although it doesn't rain a lot in Portugal in spring, now it rains already a few days. Yesterday between two showers I went out to shoot my last video panorama with a dramatic sky above the city. The sandroads were muddy and RED; because of the water you could see more colors! Red, yellow, white. My car looked like 'off-the-road', very tough and my shoes were like mud-clogs.

But the video panorama became very nice.......

Haiku

To make a connection between different panorama's in the video I want to make short poems which express in a 'to the point' way a feeling of melancholy or joy about the landscape. But I notice that it's quite difficult to write poetry in a foreign language. I try to write haiku's and each haiku has to get a development which belongs to the sort of panorama. Sometimes the number of syllabes is not correct, but it sounds better than at another one;

sky kisses red soil (5)

straight on a thin horizon (7)

heaven on earth (4!)

Very funny today, I was filming a panorama near Praia Barill and there was another spanish filmcrew. Only a few tourists could go with the train to the beach and back, because the whole filmcrew was in there; with camera, tripots, lamps, reflectionscreens etc. > Filmer was filming filmer and vise versa
In this quite admosphere with birds, the wind etc. suddenly there was the sound of a train coming by and passing. I could image how the audience in the first cinema in Paris feld when the (image of) a train was coming into a station; they were shocked and run out or ducked away.

Weekend

Normally I don't work in the weekend, because then it's time to clean the house, visit friends, go somewhere with my lover, but here I don't live with time. Besides I have the house for myself because Matthijs and Bli went out for a few days, no television, no newspaper, so I work quite hard. Yesterday I had to make a plan for a project in Holland, and within a day I could put it on paper and added photo's with it. Good thing, a lot of concentration!! Today back to the 'panorama's' and trying to make video editing on my old laptop (VERY slowly!!, need al lot of patience)

Puzzle

Today for the first time I had the feeling that the pices of the puzzle were falling together. I never knew why I was making photo´s of desolated landschapes. From all my trips they came out all the time (of course also pictures of people etc.), they trickered me the most. It started with my project of Aurorae Borealis. I went in 1992 to the Polarcircle near Tromso, Norway to film this unbelieveble powerfull nature-spectacle. It game such an incredible feeling of being part of nature AND being with myself at the same time, I never experienced this before.
Later in Mongolia I also feld myself very happy and ´at home´in this huge wide landscapes of grass, mountains and desert. Ever the save feeling was there in the ice-´deserts´ of Spitsbergen or the mountains in New Sealand.

It had to do with going beyond the daily life, being confronted with your own limits and get a wider look over this limitations.

Also now, after a very hectic and sad period, I was in the possition to travel the ´narrow road to the south´(instead to the north as Basho did) and to stay in the artists in residence project of Matthijs and Bli. I can focus on my project, doing research, make new works, all within the very concentrated period of a month. All the puzzle-pieces are falling together, especially today I had very clear sight on what I am doing and for sure it will give me a `boost` for the time after this project.

Landscape, mirror of the mind

Feld a little nervus today, because I want a lot without a real focus. But slowly it becomes more clear; I made several panoramas from less broad till very wide. I want to research when space is becoming a landscape and in what way it's reflecting a cultural existence. I found some good locations with a 'view' and I made photo's and video. With the video I want to make 360 degree recordings, with the photo's I am loooking how far I can go. Take a look at the two exemples which come with this blog.

Finding my way

After three days driving with my two dogs from Holland to Portugal, I arrived in Tavira and was happy to see Matthijs again. It was about 2,5 years ago we have seen each other but it seems less. I also met his girlfriend Bli and it feld like 'coming home'. The only thing about 'home' is that I have to let go my stressfull and hectic way of living. For this I also wanted to go away and have a concentrated working period with new 'horizons'. It is also the subject from my researchproject I want to do here; I hope to find a more layered way of making landscape-photo's. I went for several trips all over the world and everywhere I was attracted to 'empty landscapes' as a metaphore for the confrontation with the 'full mind'. Till now I didn't know why I was making this photo's all the time and I hardly used them in my installations. Only two photo's from Spitsbergen and the Negev desert were part of the installation "Empty places/full mind" in Perron 1 in Delden, Netherlands. I took the book of Ton Lemaire "Philosophy of the landscape" and I was mostly reading for the last days (beside making photo and video'tests') and it is giving a frame for my research. I will say more about this in the nexts blogs.

It all went quite well yesterday, apart from the arrival of an uninvited horde of cockroaches a few hours before the private view in the gallery. A dozen or so were milling around the front door, obviously not art-lovers so we attacked them with insect spray and in revenge, a whole army started crawling out, threatening to take over the premises. Much more insecticide and bashing with broomstick, then I was sweeping cockroach corpses out into the street. Who knows why the critters chose this particular day to emerge from wherever they were hiding, but emerge they did. Anyway by the time the real guests started arriving, the nasty intruders, dead and alive, were gone.

I exhibited 35 works on paper, the work was much praised (but no sales). Also a video, interviewing some Tavira people in their surroundings (including Matthijs and Bli). Here's a link to this video but I had to compress it a lot to upload so it's not as sharp as the original, especially the written titles. I hope you can still appreciate the ambiance.

No time to write. The workshop went well, we did monoprints from collagraphs and monotypes from the ink left over on glass sheets after printing. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Will post some results later. Now I'm preparing for my exhibition which opens on Saturday and lasts for the few days until I leave on March 3rd. Can't believe it's nearly all over!

A PORTRAIT AND A CARNIVAL

Yesterday I did a portrait in pastels of Isabel (Bli), co-director of Casa 5. I was going to work on it some more but am afraid I'll ruin it so am leaving it alone. These are not oil pastels but the dry chalky kind, lovely to work with for spontaneity as long as you don't smooth and fiddle too much. Next I'll do one of Matthijs. On Saturday I'm giving a workshop on monoprinting without a press. Will post some of the work produced then.

It was carnival here on the weekend, cold and raining on and off, but that didn't deter the high spirits. I was bundled up wearing three layers of clothes but some people didn't feel the cold at all.

Tomorrow will be my twelfth day at Casa 5 and time is going by too fast to do much blogging. I came here to draw and paint and video and take pictures and am soaking in the atmosphere, the light, the colour and character of Tavira. It's easy to get seduced by the picturesque beauty of this town but I'm trying to limit subject matter and technique to be as simple and direct as possible. I'll post some of my sketches and works in progress here now and then during my stay (I go back home to London on March 3rd).

Matthijs and Isobel have been welcoming and helpful and I feel very much at ease in this house. So far the weather has been mostly sunny but with some cold and wet days to make you appreciate the contrast.Tomorrow I'll meet some of the artists of the Association and I'm looking forward to drawing them while an official meeting is in progress. I also want to paint Matthijs and Bli some time during my stay - they've promised to sit still for me. Below are some photos I took recently.

Hoje, vive no Luxemburgo, onde trabalha como artista independente nos domínios da dança e do espetáculo. O seu trabalho compõe-se de experiencias com movimentos no intervalo (movimentos que virão), ou as intensidades de pessoas que se cruzam. Através destes, a artista tenta exprimir os movimentos múltiplos e fragmentados «de uma vida».

O ponto de partida para este trabalho poderia ser o edificio Flatiron, em Nova York. Na esquina da 5ª Avenida e da Rua 23, a Booadway abre-se entre a quadricula regular formada pelas ruas e avenidas de Manhattan, causando uma acutilante junção que enforma o local deste edificio histórico, o que cria, também, vistas simultâneas da Baixa, ao longo da 5ª Avenida e da Broadway. A utilização de uma câmera panorâmica possibilita captar estas vistas duplas ao nível das ruas. Em Tavira este efeito é frequentemente criado, casualmente, nas antigas ruas da cidade. Encontrá-las e fazer este tipo de fotografia deu forma ao meu projecto, possibilitando também, amplas oportunidades de dançar perigosamente no meio da rua.

Harvey Dwight formou-se em Arte e Design em Leeds, no Jacob Kramer College. Com formação na área da fotografia esteve, ao longo dos passados trinta anos, envolvido em projectos e no seu ensino, trabalhando tanto como técnico como professor, num conjunto de cursos no Bradford College e na Universidade de Bradford. Licenciou-se na Universidade de Humberside com um M.A. em Arte e Design em 1996, e ensinou em Bradford ate 2007. Durante os anos noventa ensinou e foi assistente em workshops de fotografia no College, Museum, New School of Social Research, em Nova York, New Jersey Country Workshops e Maine Photographic Workshops. Trabalhou ainda como assistente de George Tice, fotógrafo americano, primeiro no National Museum, em Inglaterra e mais tarde no Estados Unidos. O artista, agora sediado em Tavira, regressou recentemente de uma viagem de cerca de 6000 kilómetros pelos Estados Unidos, onde percorreu sete estados “ À procura de Lincoln”.

English

A starting point for this work could be New York City's Flatiron Building. At the corner of Fifth Avenue and Twenty Third Street, Broadway slashes through the regularity of Manhattan's grid of Streets and Avenues causing an acute junction to form the site of this historic building. What it also creates are simultaneous views downtown along both Fifth Avenue and Broadway. The use of a panoramic camera enables the capture of such double views at street level and Tavira’s old and haphazard (by chance; casually) streets create this effect more frequently. Finding and making these photographs gives shape to my project, and provides ample opportunities to dance dangerously in the centre of the road.

Harvey Dwight was trained in Art and Design at Jacob Kramer College in Leeds. He has been involved with photography and photographic education for thirty years, working as both technician and lecturer across a range of courses at both Bradford College and the University of Bradford. Throughout the Nineties he taught and assisted photographic workshops at the College, the Museum, The New School of Social Research in New York, The New Jersey Country Workshops and The Maine Photographic Workshops. He has worked as an assistant to George Tice, the American photographer at the National Museum throughout his Fellowship in England and subsequently in the United States. He graduated from the University of Humberside with an M.A. in Art and Design in 1996, and taught in Bradford until 2007. He is based in Tavira and has just returned from a 6000 km US photographic trip across seven states 'looking for Lincoln'.

No passado mês de Julho Rudolfo Quintas realizou uma residência artística na Casa 5 Artes em Tavira.
O conteúdo do seu trabalho foi dedicado à investigação teórica e prática no âmbito da Sound Art.

Sound by Movement #1 é o resultado prático do processo de experimentação prática. Este experimento
é uma instalação sonora interactiva onde se explora a criação musical através do movimento produzido pelo corpo.
Parte da ideia que o corpo está sempre em movimento, e esse movimento traduz-se constantemente em som.

O trabalho teórico que desenvolveu foi concluído no formato de um artigo sobre a performance sonora "Burning The Sound"
e será publicado num livro pelo Future Plaes - digital media festival, dia 13-17 outubro no Porto, Portugal.

ENGLISH VERSION
During July 2009 Rudolfo Quintas made an artistic residence at Casa 5 Artes in Tavira dedicated to Sound Art - theoretical and practice-base research.

Sound by Movement #1” is the practical output from his experimentation process.
This experiment is an interactive body-motion installation that musically
amplifies the sound produced trough the motion of our body in the air. The Body is constantly moving and a sound is constantly being produced and modulated.

The theoretical part was concluded as the means of a paper about a previous piece “Burning the Sound” and will be published in a book by Future Places – digital media festival 13-17 Oct Porto, Portugal.

About Rudolfo Quintas:

Rudolfo Quintas (1980) is a Portuguese born visual artist, performer and
interaction designer who seeks to expand the horizons and language of contemporary art.He explores domains of gesture and motion analyses, computer graphics and electronic music,often related to augmented reality. His research into the body as interface has beena fundamental element in his work frequently formalized in performance and installation art.

In 2009 he received the Transmediale Distinction Award 2009 in Berlin and his work waspublished in: ‘Younger Than Jesus: The Artist Directory’ co-published by the New Museum New York and Phaidon (2009 USA) - a directory with a selection of the youngest emergent artists in the world.

Rudolfo has shown his work in conferences, galleries and festivals in Portugal, Spain, Italy, Holland, England, Germany, Finland, Slovakia, Mexico, Turkey, Czech Republic and the USA.

A marcar o arranque da programação da Casa do Povo de Santo Estêvão de Tavira (CPSE), depois da habitual pausa estival, terá lugar no próximo dia 12 de Setembro de 2009, pelas 22:00, no Espaço Polivalente da CPSE, a inauguração da exposição de pintura «Colin Howe - Obra Recente». Será seguido pelo concerto de Jazz: Luís Monteiro convida Heike Brockmann e David Gausden.

O pintor Colin Howe (Inglaterra, 1949) vive e trabalha actualmente em Portugal, nomeadamente em Olhão. Formado pela Bradford Art College (Reino Unido), recebeu numerosas distinções, entre elas a «Chromacolour International Prize» para melhor técnica de aguarela (mais informações em aqui). Até 31 de Dezembro de 2009, estarão patentes no Espaço Polivalente da CPSE os seus últimos trabalhos (várias técnicas).

Esta iniciativa é uma parceria com a «Casa 5 - Associação de Artes Plásticas e Visuais» (Tavira), associação recentemente constituída, que visa desenvolver e promover projectos de artes plásticas e visuais, através de actividades tais como exposições de artes plásticas, residência de artistas, passeios temáticos pela cidade e projectos em parceria com outras entidades afins, exposições conjuntas, mostra de projectos dos artistas residentes, workshops de artes e sessões de leitura.

The masterpiece, the ultimate drawing i want to make
is near me and far away.

I know its on the street, in daily life,
during peeling patotoes,
somewhere between here and there.

I see it everywhere.
On the left, right, above, below.

When you taste it, drinking a coffee is life,
Preparing food is life, when you taste it.
Looking around is life, when you taste it.

Doing this, doing that.
A piece of paper here, a color there, a line,
drink something against the heat.
Look at people around doing the same as i,
meaning nothing important,
nothing liberating,
nothing that could change the world.
Even when you are a president of a big country,
even when you are an enlighted person.
But what ever you are i do, it has it’s beauty, the right colour, the right form, the right spices...
when i taste it. When i let it happen.

A collage is a mix of everything of whats happening in daily life.
And i didnt plan this life.

When i am willing to see them, to welcome them.

A little while ago a wall, a solid stone wall
was speaking to me.

Birds in the sky, fish in the sea, clowds in the air.

Take 6 sheets of nori seaweed.
One six-inch pickled radish.
Pickled ginger.
8 oz of sushi rice.
6 oz of raw fresh salmon.
2 tablespoons of Japanese soy sauce.
1 tablespoon of Sugar.
1 teaspoon of Wasabi paste.

Slice the pickled radish into a thin strip.
Slice the raw fresh salmon in to a slightly thicker strip and place with the soy sauce and sugar.
Drain; then coast with Wasabi paste.
Position the nori seaweed sheets on a plate, and place the sushi rice on the seaweed.
Place one strip of salmon and one strip radish in the centre and roll to form sushi.
Slice and serve with pickled ginger.

There you go: LIFE

The movement has to continue.
Don’t stop.
Do not hesitate.
Merge, melt, disappear.

When I am left behind,
the drawing will liberate itself.

Last week, on the 21th July, I was invited go give my opinion on the report ‘Reforming Arts and Culture Higher Education in Portugal’, prepared by a team of international experts: Abrar Hasan, Ulrike Blumenreich, Bruce Brown, Peter Eversmann and Francesco Zurlo for the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education.

I read this document and I found it excellent! In fact, all the thoughts I had as art student and now as assistant professor on identifying problems and how things could change, I could say in matter of congratulating this report that are all there!

The experts made deep analyses and proposed several recommendations both to the Government and Institutions of Higher Education. One of them is about the possibility to do a Phd in Art by Practice-Base Research instead the more traditional textually-based research.

I totally agree with this recommendation because it will bring more professional artists to art institutions, what seems very natural.

I focus my post on this recommendation, because the government already change the law this week! So from now on, an artist can candidate to a Phd in Art in Portugal by doing practice-base research.I feel very happy with this law because I believe this is a very positive and progressive step in Reforming Art in Higher Education.

The role of Good Meals in a Creative Process

Does good food plays any role in a successful creative process?
To answer this we first needed to agree about what
is a “successful creative process”. Just for this moment,
let me say that is a process that opens to the human being
new horizons and perspectives about their expectations.
These expectations can be general issues in his/her life,
or particularly, like developing new art. For the artist,
this two are often interlinked. I could say that the best
results for my artistic residence would be a good creative
process – a process that opens me new horizons and perspectives
about my expectations.

Returning to the meals, what I know is that the meals we have been eating,
cooked inside the house, have been a good part of my balance.
I’m not referring to its energetic properties, but to its spiritual ones:
- as if the meals bring you back stability if you loose it during
your artistic enquiry: doubts, fears, anxieties or passionate ideas and feelings.

Like a note:
Good art takes time to cook, a special way to be served and
no rush to eat so you can taste all its flavours
and feel that it was made especially for you!

on friday the 24th of july we have another diner party ... and you are welcome!

Because we often have diner parties and somehow the costs need to be paid we ask €15 for food and wine for one person.
You can be sure of a rich table with several wonderful dishes.

We are with maximum 8 people around the table, including us, inside and outside in the patio.
We start at 20.00 hour.

Drawings: from Beach to Computation

Yesterday I went to the beach and outlined-draw some landscapes and human figure.
I did it to relax. Tonight I came back to those drawings and I decided to apply some algorithmic principles to its painting. Thank you Sonia!
Starting from the centre:
1) Draw a line from centre with an angle between 3 sizes (small, medium, large);
2) Each line size was chosen randomness;
3) After having the lines, I start do draw circles with the same principle from the centre;
4) Then colour them randomness, by choosing a colour by chance;

Later I might do some experiments in Processing (www.processing.org) with this simple principles applying to real outline drawing.

Here is the result, they look odd but was good fun :)

Futurism Readings on Sound and Event Planning!

I have been reading “Criteria for a Music Department Head Search” (Golen Levin 2009),
“The Art of Noises” ( Luigi Russolo 1913) and “Manifesto of Futuristic Musicians” ( by Balila Pratela 1912).

I also took some time to start planning an event to the community, to show what I am doing here, but also to promote contemporary art and contemporary experiments.
After talking with some friends that promote culture and clubbing in Tavira, this idea grew up and now we want to make night exhibition showing sound art installations and clubbing event! I will write more about this event sooner!

I spent the afternoon on the beach drawing sketches of landscape and people, after that I had great dinner prepared by Bli, with Matthijs and Filipe. Amazing food!

Dear friends,
I arrived this weekend to Tavira to start my artistic residence in Casa 5 Artes.
I will be here one month, and I will be researching, experimenting and exhibiting “something” in Sound Art.
Casa 5 Artes is a recent project, and I am the first artist-in-residence. I am exited about it!
